When Prince Baelor Targaryen steps forward to join Ser Duncan the Tall‘s champions in the Trial of the Seven in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 4, it’s one of the most powerful moments in the entire series. Baelor, the Prince of Dragonstone and Hand of the King, chooses to stand with a common hedge knight against his own nephews and his brother Maekar. But why does he do it?

Quick read:

  • Baelor is known as a genuinely good Targaryen, unlike the “mad” Targaryens

  • Bertie Carvel says Baelor is a leader “for whom details matter”

Prince Baelor: the good Targaryen who chose morality

In a family known for madness and cruelty, Prince Baelor Targaryen stands out as something rare: a genuinely good person. His Targaryen bloodline connects him to generations of rulers who have ranged from brilliant to brutal, but Baelor represents a different path. As Bertie Carvel explains, Baelor is “a leader for whom details matter.”  This isn’t just about remembering Dunk’s lance count correctly — it’s about a man who values truth above convenience, who chooses accuracy even when it’s easier to look away.

Carvel elaborates on what makes this quality so important: “I suppose the truth matters. It’s also a test, though, that moment,” Carvel says. (Bertie Carvel, actor) When Dunk arrives claiming he and Ser Arlan broke seven lances, Baelor gently corrects him — it was four. The precision matters because precision speaks to character.

“But yeah, the truth matters and he does remember and he remembers in detail and that’s who he is,” Carvel explains. In an age of spin and half-truths, Prince Baelor’s insistence on accuracy is genuinely moving. “And again, you know, these are heroic qualities in our day and age. How nice to be reminded that there are leaders for whom details matter and so does the truth.”

Why Baelor chooses Dunk over his own family

So why does Baelor Targaryen choose to fight for a common hedge knight against his own brother and nephews? The answer is simple: he chooses right over convenience. As Carvel notes, Baelor doesn’t know beforehand what he’s going to do when Dunk arrives.

“It’s so interesting hearing people talk about these stories as history and that these things are known. But in the moment that they happen, they’re not known. And that’s true of our world, too, isn’t it? Each of us has to decide from one minute to the next how we’re going to behave. That’s what gives our choices a moral dimension that we could go either way.”

That’s what makes Baelor’s choice so powerful — he could dismiss Dunk outright, protect his position, and align with his family. But instead, he chooses kindness and honesty. In the books, Baelor Targaryen — known as Baelor Breakspear — was famous for his chivalry and wisdom. He was a legendary warrior who defeated the Blackfyre pretender in the First Blackfyre Rebellion, yet he counseled mercy toward defeated enemies, arguing that clemency was not just morally right but strategically sound. He understood that a king who shows mercy to honorable foes gains more loyal subjects than a king who only offers death.
