The Game of Thrones universe has given us some incredible shows and moments, with elegant and carefully crafted writing. However, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes a completely different approach, and showrunner Ira Parker has a clear reason for that choice.
Quick read:
• Ira Parker calls Dunk an “unpolished” character due to his background
• He says GOT and HOTD’s heavy writing will not match AKOTSK’s original tone
• The show’s music also has been specifically crafted to match its protagonist’s personality
Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon raised the bar
Ira Parker recently spoke to IndieWire regarding the show. According to him, Game of Thrones remains one of the greatest television series ever created, and no new show can truly match or repeat its success in the same way. House of the Dragon, led by Ryan Condal, focused on a tighter story while still delivering what many call some of the most polished and beautiful writing.
“Game of Thrones is one of the greatest series to ever come out. No one’s ever gonna be able to compete with that. You can’t even try to do the same thing again, you know? Ryan [Condall] has done such an extraordinary job with ‘House of the Dragon’ taking a narrower focus but then expanding into territory everyone loves so much — with, honestly, I think some of the most polished, beautiful writing that’s been done in this world [of Westeros].”

Dunk and Egg stories are built differently
The stories of Dunk and Egg come from George R.R. Martin’s shorter novellas, which have a much simpler and more grounded feel compared to the larger epics. Ira Parker explained this difference directly:
“Dunk and Egg is the opposite of that. Dunk is so unpolished, as a human being.”
Ser Duncan the Tall is not a refined noble or a clever politician. He is a big, honest hedge knight from the lowest parts of society; rough around the edges, socially awkward, and straightforward. Giving him polished, poetic lines would feel completely out of character. Everything in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is shaped to match Dunk’s personality and perspective. The pacing moves quickly and lightly, focusing mainly on Dunk, Egg, and their travels rather than massive political schemes.
The music stays playful, giving the series a lively, almost Western-like adventure tone. The action, humour, and everyday moments all stay simple and real because that is how Dunk experiences the world. Parker pointed out that even if the team had tried to copy the style of the earlier shows, the characters and stories naturally pull in the opposite direction.
