The Winds of Winter, the sixth instalment in the A Song Of Ice And Fire series, has been in huge demand for some time now, with its predecessor – A Dance With Dragons – coming out way back in 2011. Since then, the TV series based on the books – Game of Thrones – has already overtaken it in terms of its storylines. So with Martin promising that he is still working on The Winds of Winter, when will it finally see the light of day?
With the final season of Game of Thrones set to air in a matter of months, it’s now highly unlikely that TWOW will be released before that.
However, when George RR Martin took to Twitter yesterday to promise an upcoming new trailer for the show, it’s all many fans could think about.
“HBO has announced the premiere date for the eighth (and final) season of GAME OF THRONES. Mark it down on your calendars: APRIL 14. There’s a new teaser too (and a longer trailer in the works),” he had posted.
But the most-liked reply says: “Where’s the Winds of Winter though?”
“cool when are you gonna announce winds of winter?” said someone else, while another of several very similar tweets read: “What about Winds of winter?”
“Sweet!! Now, err, how about that book?” said yet another post.
When Fire and Blood, the GOT companion book, was released late last year, Martin did briefly address TWOW in interviews.
“I’ve been struggling with it for a few years,” he told the Guardian. “The Winds of Winter is not so much a novel as a dozen novels, each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players, antagonists, allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together against the march of time in an extremely complex fashion.
“So it’s very, very challenging. Fire and Blood by contrast was very simple. Not that it’s easy – it still took me years to put together – but it is easier.
“The Winds of Winter is next, then I’ll decide what comes after that – whether it’s to go on to A Dream of Spring, the last one, or whether I switch back into Fire and Blood II, do another Dunk and Egg story or two.
“But I’ll worry about that one thing at a time – that’s too far ahead.”
Game of Thrones, meanwhile, returns on April 14.
