A Song of Ice and Fire fans are patiently waiting for The , which will hopefully release next year. And a popular new fan theory reckons it’s possible author is done but has saved writing a specific death to the end. WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD.

A post by ASOIAF expert BryndenBFish read: “Take this with the obvious caveats/grains of salt.

“I’d heard along the way that GRRM hadn’t written the death of a character who will die in Winds.

“Sorry, can’t say more than that! Guess away.”

Reddit user SweatyPlace referenced this quote and pointed out something Martin has said in the past about writing deaths.

The fan wrote: “Remember A Storm of Swords?

“This is what he said about the Red Wedding: ‘I couldn’t write it when I got to it. “‘I skipped over it – I finished the entire rest of the book with a hole in it.’”

The theorist added: “So guys, maybe, just maybe it is possible that the book is over, like really over and he is just going to write that death of the character and maybe some surrounding chapters and that’s the end of the book!!”

The top upvoted comments on the post pointed out and agreed such a death would probably be Hodor’s.

Game of Thrones fans will remember he died at the Cave of the Three-Eyed Raven, killed by wights as he allowed Bran Stark – the future King of Westeros – to escape.

This took place in season 6 episode The Door, which was the first of the series to go into the uncharted territories of Martin’s writing after the show overtook A Song of Ice and Fire’s narrative.

Considering this, it seems likely that Hodor’s death will take place in The Winds of Winter rather than final book A Dream of Spring.

Meanwhile, Martin has teased that The Winds of Winter’s completion is finally nearing.

Speaking at the Chicago Humanities Festival, the 71-year-old author said: “When I actually finish a book you know the rush that comes through me.

“It was easier to write short stories then because then I would get that rush you know every few weeks.

“But now I get that rush every, you know, eight years or something like that.”

He added: “But it’s a great rush, and I’m hoping to have it again in the relatively near future when I finish Winds of Winter.”

“Relatively near future” sounds pretty encouraging for Martin’s completion of the penultimate A Song of Ice and Fire book.

Martin has also spoken recently of the pressure of finishing The Winds of Winter amid “snarky” fan impatience.

Martin said: “Yes, especially because a certain portion of them are really impatient and snarky about it. You know, you can get one person who posts 150 messages in three days, all of which is ‘Where is Winds of Winter?’
