  1. My tinfoil theory: the Nights Watch are the “horn that wakes the sleepers,” the sleepers are the army of dead Starks in the Crypts and the reason that there must always be a Stark in Winterfell is because a Stark is needed to lead this army – like Bran, who could possibly control them in the same way the Others control the wights.

  2. The crypts of Winterfell just might be the prison of the Great Other. Dragons, dragon eggs, harps and horns, have been discussed so much, and don't seem to hold much creedence. The fact there must always be a Stark at Winterfell, reason and purpose haven been forgotten, leeds to something far more significant in the crypts. The fact the crypts are very old, deep and have collapsed over time, may harbor 'the First Kinght King, Great Other.' The Children of the Forest, are said to leave magic into the foundations, walls of Winterfell when Bran the Builder constructed the oldest keep. The land was never leveled, and the Godswood /Weirwood tree's roots go very deep, under and around Winterfell. This indeed would help keep the secret of the crypts and what possible evil the crypts may hold from being unleashed.
