Most people have probably at least heard of Game of Thrones and the controversy surrounding season 8. Yet not everyone knows that there are cut scenes that might have made a difference in terms of fan reactions. These scenes are all small moments, so it’s easy to see how they could be cut from the final product. However, many fans may have preferred it if these scenes were left in the show.
Then again, it’s hard to know. Would these small scenes really make a big difference? That’s exactly what we’re going to discuss.
What scenes were cut that might have improved fan reactions?
According to Insider, there’s quite a few scenes that were cut. Some of these scenes may have been important in terms of fan reactions. Such as a scene where Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister fight White Walkers in the Crypts of Winterfell during the battle. It might have improved some fans’ reactions to Sansa’s ending if she had been shown defending her people like that.
As it was, Sansa seemed to be nothing but a foil to Daenerys Targaryen in season 8, trying to cause trouble for the Mother of Dragons. Because of this, some fans felt that her ending wasn’t earned as much as it could have been. Yet small scenes like this one might have changed some fans’ minds.
Then again, perhaps not. There are definitely some fans out there who would have disliked Sansa’s ending no matter what happened. Yet we still think this scene would have improved things for some of the fans, who would have liked to see Sansa stepping out of her comfort zone by fighting.
What other scenes were cut from ‘Game of Thrones’ season 8?
According to Insider, there are two crucial scenes that were cut about Missandei and Grey Worm. These scenes really showed the love between the two characters. One of the scenes takes place when Daenerys and her armies arrive at Winterfell. Missandei says that Grey Worm “must be freezing” to which he replies “I am cold” and smiles at Missandei.
Missandei, of course, smiles back. How cute! Another cute scene shows Missandei not-so-sneakily looking at Grey Worm and smiling at the feast after the Battle of Winterfell. Daenerys notices and smiles when Missandei is not looking.
Then, however, Daenerys’ gaze turns to Jon Snow and she stops smiling, noting his preoccupation. Daenerys would later tell Grey Worm to go and rest and Missandei would want to follow her love, so she would lie and say she wasn’t feeling well. Her queen would know she was lying and would suggest that perhaps she has a headache, to which Missandei would agree and leave the festivities.
These scenes would not only have showed the deep love between Missandei and Grey Worm, making Missandei’s eventual demise all the more tragic, but they would have provided a nice contrast to Daenerys and Jon’s relationship. The second scene also would have shown how lonely Daenerys truly felt, which might have helped some fans understand her dark turn. However, it’s hard to know if these small scenes would have made any difference in fan reactions. Some fans, most likely, wouldn’t have liked where the show went with Missandei and Grey Worm’s tragic ending or Daenerys and Jon’s no matter what.
Yet for others, these scenes may have provided extra context that made the ending of the show make a bit more sense.
How could the writers have added further context to explain Daenerys’ transformation?
According to Insider, an extended scene could have further shown Daenerys’ loneliness and perhaps made it easier for fans to accept her somewhat sudden transformation. In this scene, Daenerys is upset that she does not have any love in Westeros, only fear. Jon then reminds her that he loves her and she is his queen. Daenerys asks if she’s just his queen and Jon, in the cut scene, replies “no.”
The couple kiss but Daenerys can feel that Jon is conflicted. When she pulls away from the kiss, she says “It disgusts you.” Jon then calls her Dany but is unable to deny her words. This is when she says “Alright then, let it be fear.”
This scene could have shown fans just how alone Daenerys really was and how truly isolated she felt. While that may not have justified her later actions, it might have somewhat explained them. Then again, perhaps not. Some fans probably would have felt that Daenerys’ change came out of nowhere, even if her loneliness had been explored more.
In the end, it’s hard to know if these scenes making it into the final cut would have affected fans’ reactions to Game of Thrones season 8. Perhaps these cut scenes are better off left out. Yet maybe they would have made a difference. They certainly would have fleshed out certain characters and plotlines a bit more, and that’s always a good thing.
