Emilia Clarke says “Hell to the yeah!” at the prospect of playing the first female James Bond, and so do we! Ever since it became official that Daniel Craig would be playing Bond for the last time in 2020’s No Time to Die, we’ve all been obsessing over who could take on the 007 mantle next. While there are plenty of male actors that could easily step into the role — including Game of Thrones veteran Richard Madden, who’s name has been floated a couple of times — might it be time for a woman to take it on?
During an interview with Empire, Clarke was asked whether she’d consider playing the first female Bond, and her response was golden.
Yeah! Of course! Hell to the yeah! James Bond is one of those franchises where it’s never not cool. You could literally make the naffest James Bond in the world and it would still be cool.
In my opinion, of all the actresses that could slip into this role effortlessly, Emilia Clarke is number one on my list. She’s already fluent in being badass thanks to her tenure as Daenerys Targaryen over on Game of Thrones. What more could anyone ask for?
The debate over whether there should be a female Bond is not very different from the debate Doctor Who fans had when Jodie Whittaker was cast in a role some time ago. But we finally got our first female Doctor, so why not our first female Bond as well? Universal is already stacking up female talent behind the camera, with Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge being called in to punch up the script.
Whether or not the James Bond franchise will opt to take the step that Doctor Who did is yet to be seen, but a lot of us are crossing our fingers for a change. And while Emilia Clarke is totally on board to take the role, we have plenty of amazing, kickass women to pick from in the industry. Emily Blunt? Charlize Theron? Thandie Newton? Lots of options, although it’d be hard for any of them to stand up to the Mother of Dragons.
