It’s a question that is haunting the mind of every single Game Of Thrones devotee: ‘What will I do when the series eight ends?’
After all HBO are planning to try and turn out some prequels, but they are going to be years in the making. And, it’s not like there a contender out there to go head-to-head with George R.R. Martins’ creation, in all honesty.
That is, there isn’t yet…
Netflix could just have found the very fix to stop us all jonesing for everything Westeros, Stark, Targaryen, and Lannister with one of its upcoming Originals projects, The Witcher.
Announced in May of last year, the series will bring the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski to life. Having already earned millions of fans thanks to the series of books, and the video game offshoots of the fantasy series, The Witcher already has an established track record with fans of action and fantasy.
Both the books and the games focus on the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, one of the last remaining human offshoots of the monster hunters called Witchers.
Witchers are indeed human, but to make them the perfect weapons for combating the supernatural beasts and monsters that haunt the strange land, known simply as, The Continent, they were chemically and magically altered.
Armed with magical powers, heightened reflexes and special abilities, they are able to take on beasts that would kill any other human – though of course, they’re not invincible.
The books and video games set Geralt up as a blade for hire in a troubled medieval world, though while he strives for a simple life chasing down monster bounties, he inadvertently finds himself at the centre of huge political and royal intrigues as well as cataclysmic events.
As newcomers to the franchise will discover, trouble is never far behind The Witcher. In the past Geralt has taken on Emperors, Kings, Sorcerers and witches, long-lost races and countless numbers of monsters (ranging from kinda scary to potentially town/city ending).
So far so good, right?
With a reputation for tonnes of bloodshed, killing of characters, and generally being just a little saucy, Game Of Thrones has made itself THE show to beat.
The Witcher certainly hasn’t been afraid to take on these themes in both its books and video games, in fact, Geralt is a bit of a ladies’ man.
It’s also been known to tackle complex themes to do with race, prejudice, politics, and social injustice.
Lauren Hissrich (The Defenders, Daredevil, and The West Wing) is the woman behind the script, and just this month she announced on her Twitter account that she’d finished her first draft of the pilot.
So far, very little is know about the TV series, however, what we do know is that it will be based on the books, but Geralt’s character will be inspired by the iconic look CD Projekt RED gave him in the video games.
Again there’s no word on casting, and rumours are pretty scarce on the ground too.
Netflix are yet to announce a date for the series, but with GOT signing off in 2019 we’re almost certain it’s on its way.
