Game of Thrones has reportedly wrapped up filming for the eighth and final season of the HBO epic

A number of the stars of the cast have posted emotional messages to say their goodbyes to the show, including Maisie Williams and Kit Harington.

We are now in the final stretch with the final six episodes of the epic creation just a few months away and fans getting nervous, tense and excited in equal measure.

So when can we expect to return to Westeros and who will we see when we get there?

When is Game of Thrones season 8 coming out?

No official release date has been confirmed yet, but we do know that it will be in 2019, so we have over five months still to wait.

If any of the previous seasons are anything to go by, we can expect season 8 to be on our screens very early in 2019.

Every one of the previous five seasons took either four or five months between filming finishing and the first episode being aired, so it would be significantly longer in season 8 if it were to come out after January.

A lengthy delay would be especially surprising seen as there are only six episodes in season 8 rather than the 10 of previous seasons.

Who is joining the cast?

The only confirmed new character is Harry Strickland, played by Marc Rissmann in season 8, who is the leader of the Golden Company.

Euron Greyjoy has been sent to recruit the Company and bring them back to fight for Cersei Lannister, so we can expect Rissman to be involved in some hefty battle scenes.

Otherwise, we can expect all the big names (that have so far avoided death) to return for the final season.
