As we hurtle towards the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones next April, fans are already thinking about how the hugely successful series may end. Aidan Gillen, aka Littlefinger, is no different.

In an interview with ET Online, the Drumcondra man stated that he thinks a happy ending might not be the way for show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to go.

“I always thought it’d be nice for it to have a happy ending. But I can’t imagine that would be appropriate,” he said.

Although Littlefinger met his maker at the end of seven season, Gillen is looking forward to watching the GOT series come to an end as a fan.

“It’s a great thing. I’ll be excited to watch it as an audience member. [Hopefully] it’s something unexpected,” he said.

“There were stories about George RR Martin leaving secrets in vaults with combinations and all of that,” Gillen added.

“I know it adds to the allure, but the fact that so many people have so many expectations hinging on it and so many people are interested, it’s this huge global storytelling phenomenon. It’s pretty fascinating. The fact that I was actually part of it for a number of years is kind of mind-blowing, as a big player in George Martin’s fantastic world”.

It’s been a great week for ‘The Wire’ actor who, according to RTÉ, will be rewarded with an Oscar Wilde Award by the US-Irish Alliance in the run up to the Oscars on February 21st.
