Game of Thrones is ending what’s to come in life after Westeros for the cast? (Picture: HBO)

The final season of Game of Thrones is very nearly upon us, and as we reflect on the highs, the lows, and the absolutely horrific, the showrunners are doing the same.

Some of the most iconic scenes in TV’s recent history have come from Game Of Thrones – the Red Wedding, the season four finale, certain horrible people being crowned, other horrible ones dying… Daenerys and the dragon.

It’s endless TV gold.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wonder how, after so many years engrossed in Westeros and the battle for the Iron Throne, they will return to reality.

‘It’s the best job I’ve ever had, or ever likely will have,’ Benioff admitted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Reminiscing about the show – and the year round work the showrunners put into it, he added: ‘You have all these characters you love and you can come up with ideas for them, and a few months later these incredible actors will be saying those things. That’s such a rare gift.’

Weiss was equally emotional about Game of Thrones, as they wrapped up filming season eight.

‘If 10 years ago somebody had given me a chance to write a ticket, I wouldn’t have been crazy enough to write a ticket to something this great.’

He added: ‘After it’s done, it will be like re-entering some weird universe where I don’t even know how people act there anymore… When I’m 75 years old, I’m going to be [affecting a quivering, elderly voice], “You know, it would be great if Tyrion said… Ah, goddamn it!”‘

What can we expect from the final series?

**Warning: Spoilers adrift.***

A report from Watchers On The Wall indicated eight new people had been cast for the show – though they could be little more than soldiers in the upcoming battles.

Cersei is having to defend her precarious position on the Iron Throne, with the aid of the Golden Company, whilst the Mother of Dragons will have her hands full fighting the White Walkers – as well as her feelings for Jon, to whom she is related by blood.

It’s going to be a wild ride.

Season eight of Game of Thrones will commence on 14 April on Sky Atlantic and Now TV.
