Olivia Cooke is not ready to leave Alicent Hightower behind. In a new short talk with Screen Rant, the House of the Dragon star said she has not started preparing for the show’s end, and that the grief may not hit her until long after cameras stop.

Quick read:

  • Olivia Cooke isn’t ready to say goodbye
  • House of the Dragon Season 4 starts filming next spring
  • Grief of the conclusion might arrive late

Asked whether she has begun her “preparation process for the final season,” Cooke was blunt:

“I haven’t. I haven’t. We start filming next spring, but I don’t really know. I’m sure it’ll take me ages. You know, I’m English. My emotions are far, far deep down. You know a year later that I’ll finally feel the grief from that show ending.”

Season 4 filming starts next spring

Cooke confirmed that production on Season 4 begins in spring 2027. The season is officially the last. Showrunner Ryan Condal has already said the series will end after four seasons, with a likely 2028 premiere if it follows the usual two-year gap.

Why the goodbye hits

Cooke took over Alicent midway through Season 1, after Emily Carey played the character as a teenager. Since then she has been one of the show’s two central faces, opposite Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra. Their friendship, rupture, and uneasy peace have defined the series.

Season 3 kept Alicent offscreen for much of the finale. Rhaenyra sent her away from King’s Landing on a dangerous mission in exchange for freedom for herself and Helaena. Alicent is not there when Helaena jumps to her death, and she does not yet know what she has lost. That unfinished grief is waiting for Season 4.

“Deep” emotions

Cooke’s line about her emotions sitting “far, far deep down” is typical of how she talks about the role. She has said before that she finds it easier to access feeling in character than in real life. The joke is dry. The point is not. She expects the end of House of the Dragon to land late — a year after wrap, when the work is already gone.

For now, she is not preparing to say goodbye. She is preparing to film. The grief, she says, can wait.
