Emilia Clarke was one of the star names at last night’s Game of Thrones season premiere in New York City, and her presence on the red carpet certainly caused a stir among fans and fashion experts alike.

Clarke’s eye-catching aquamarine Valentino dress received plenty of plaudits from both camps, as eagle-eyed observers noted that, beneath the actress’ transparent top, a poetic message was emblazoned on her garment.

‘Leave your door open for me,’ it read. ‘I might sleepwalk into your arms.’

That phrase isn’t a GoT line (or at least not the last time we checked, anyway) but was in fact borne from an intriguing collaboration between Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli and four leading poets, who each worked with the designer on his Autumn/Winter 2019 collection.

Greta Bellamacina, Yrsa Daley-Ward, Mustafa The Poet and Robert Montgomery were the four writers who each individually met with Piccioli while he was designing the collection – although it’s not clear which poet penned the lines which ended up on Emilia’s dress.

The resulting poems from the quartet have also been compiled in a poetry booklet titled On Love.

‘These poems were inspired by Pierpaolo’s creations, which celebrate the daily search for love, the broken light behind each day,’ Bellamacina explained in the booklet.

Piccioli added: ‘Poetry is the most intimate expression of freedom. Because freedom is what we all need now. Because “we do not want to be so dreamless now.”‘

Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen, meanwhile, will be a key player in season eight of Game of Thrones – which, understandably, will contain at least one ‘shocking moment’ per episode, according to her co-star Isaac Hempstead Wright.
