Daenerys Targaryen has been very protective of her dragons ever since they appeared in the finale of season one.
She has nurtured them and treated them as her children throughout her journey across Yunkai, Meereen and Westeros.
In season seven she saw one of them Viserys be killed by the Night King when he threw an ice spear, but the dragon has no been reanimated as a Wight and was used to destroy part of The Wall.
The Mother of Dragons has had to try and recover from the loss of one of her children and she has since given permission to Jon Snow to ride one of the two that remain.
Their names have a significant meaning to Daenerys and connect back to her family and they even have a link to Jon Snow.
What are the names of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons?
Daenarys’ dragons were born following the death of her husband Khal Drogo, as well as her brother Viserys and her unborn child.
These events and her family history had a big influence over her decisions of what to name each of them.
The three dragons are called Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion.
Drogon is the largest one and has most black scales and he is often the one that Daenerys has mounted and he has helped protect her on numerous occasions.
He was named after Daenerys’ husband Khal Drogo.
Rhaegal has a slightly greener colour and he is named after Daenerys’ brother Rhaegar Targaryen, who was killed during Robert’s Rebellion.
He is also the dragon that Jon Snow was given permission to mount.
The third dragon is Viscerion, who was named after her other brother Viserys, who was killed by Khal Drogo in season one after molten gold was poured on his head.
Viserion has slightly lighter scales, more white and blue, and was killed by the Night King in season 7 before being reanimated as a Wight.
