Warning: Spoilers from Game Of Thrones season 8.
A Varys scene from Game Of Thrones season eight episode five might have hinted that Varys (Conleth Hill) is trying to poison Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).
The penultimate episode The Bells saw Varys murdered by Daenerys for questioning her ability to rule Westeros, after learning Jon (Kit Harington) is actually a Targaryen and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
But he might have been planning to get her out of the way much sooner as a scene from the start of the episode suggested.
Varys was visited by one of his spies to get an update from her.
He asked: ‘Nothing?’ and she replied: ‘She won’t eat.’
Varys said: ‘We’ll try again at supper’ before advising his spy: ‘The greater the risk the greater the reward.’
Is Varys checking up on Dany’s eating habits? And is it because he planned to poison her in order to let Jon take the throne.
Daenerys’ behaviour in episode five – burning King’s Landing to the ground after all the innocent citizens had surrendered – caused controversy and made The Bells the most slated episode in the show’s history.
But it could have been a sign that Varys was right about the Mother of Dragons, that she is slowly unravelling and is destined to become like her father the ‘Mad’ king.
However his plans were scuppered by Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) who sussed what he was up to and, as the Hand of the Queen, it was his duty to tell Dany.
Daenerys had him killed by her last remaining dragon, who roasted him with fire.
Hill has since admitted that he was ‘frustrated’ about how Varys died.
He told Entertainment Weekly: ‘I took it very personally. I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist.
‘I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in same position a lot more than I did at the time.
‘You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about.’
Game Of Thrones continues Monday at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Seasons 1-7 are available on NOW TV.
