So after Game of Thrones fans demanded season eight was rewritten following the painfully dull deaths of Cersei and Jaime Lannister, it appears the biggest shock of this dismal final chapter is yet to come.
The Bells went down as the worst reviewed episode in Game of Thrones history as years of gearing up for the biggest battle in George RR Martin’s story wasn’t a battle at all. Season eight episode five was simply Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) burning down King’s Landing with no competition whatsoever. There was no confrontation with Cersei (Lena Headey), no desperate plea from Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) – nothing.
We all felt betrayed and it will take a very long time to forgive showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, who have now been officially listed as ‘bad writers’ on Google.
But what if there’s more. What if, after Cersei’s palace came crashing down, Jaime made it out of the rubble with his life still in tact?
Fans have noticed that stars of the HBO series have been paying all sorts of tributes to Cersei – and even Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) – following Game of Thrones’ penultimate instalment, but Jaime’s barely had a look-in.
Where was Gwendoline Christie’s nod to Brienne of Tarth’s first love? We’re waiting, Gwen.
Their silence speaks volumes.
Even Entertainment Weekly, who splash the first interview with every actor moment after their character’s demise, are yet to release their chat with Nikolaj. In fact, they’ve teased they’ll be ‘holding that one for a bit…’
Oh.
Wonder if The Simpsons saw that one coming?
Steering into this weekend’s finale, HBO released the first look pictures of Daenerys addressing the people of King’s Landing, after burning down their city and their loved ones. Tyrion Lannister, understandably, looks furious while the last time we saw Arya Stark, it was pretty clear who had been added to her kill list.
Game of Thrones concludes Sunday at 9pm on HBO and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic here in the UK. Seasons one to seven are currently available to stream on NOW TV.
