Game Of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen knew how to rally and rile up her troops in the midst of war – sounding like a fighter in every word as she leads them into the fore.
Turns out that scary fire and spirit was brought about from the most horrific of places, Adolf Hitler’s speeches in the midst of Nazi Germany.
Emilia Clarke, who played Dany on the long-running series, took inspiration from the dictator responsible for the deaths of millions amid the Holocaust during World War II.
His speeches in the midst of his rise to power have become infamous, with his army’s blind devotion and salutations as he gave rousing speeches for them to do his bidding some of the most notable moments of his reign.
So, naturally, after burning an entire city to the ground in order to rise to power herself, Emilia Clarke thought it was only fitting to look at the pieces, to inspire the same reaction.
‘In giving all these speeches in fake languages, I watched a lot of videos of — now it seems funny — dictators and powerful leaders speaking a different language to see if I could understand what they were saying without knowing the language,’ she told Variety.
‘And you can! You absolutely can understand what Hitler’s f**king saying, these single-focus orators speaking a foreign language.’
‘So I thought, “If I can believe every single word I’m saying, the audience won’t need to be looking at the subtitles too much,”‘ she added.
The series came to a dramatic end last night with the final goodbye to the Seven Kingdoms – and the long-running power struggle finally came to an end.
Speaking about the series legacy, Emilia believes that it all comes down to how power corrupts, something her character learned all too well as her overwhelming desire for control ultimately killed her.
‘I think it is what it always has been, which is a discussion of power and what it does to a single human being, a group of human beings, and the people they are meant to be serving,’ Clarke said.
Game Of Thrones is available to stream now on NOW TV.
