Although many Game of Thrones fans aren’t happy with the final season (about 1.7 million of them, at least), series star Alfie Allen couldn’t be more pleased about how his character ended up.

The reaction from the cast to the controversial end of the Primetime Emmy Award-winning series has been mixed, with Conleth Hill and Natalia Tena openly criticising their former bosses while Sophie Turner and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have defended the show.

Alfie Allen had one of the more memorable deaths in season eight, being impaled by The Night King while protecting his ‘brother’ Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright). And in an interview with The Wrap, Allen championed both his character’s demise and the season as a whole.

“Some people weren’t satisfied with how it ended, but it’s the same with a lot of these TV shows,” he argued. “But in terms of the arc of Theon, I hope people were happy with it.

“On the day I felt happy with it, and when I got to see it, I was thankful that [showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff] had given me that kind of stuff to do.”

Allen also spoke about how exciting it was to film his showdown with The Night King after the notoriously rigorous production schedule for ‘The Long Night’.

“It was great,” he remembered. “There was a sense of camaraderie on the set, because it was in the midst of three or four weeks of night shoots.

“And to be there with Isaac, who was the person I did my first scene with in the first season, was great. As soon as I saw that, I was very, very happy. It was a slog, those night shoots, but it was great.”

Allen earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work in the final season (although he did have to submit himself, along with several other co-stars).
