The Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik) was a formidable foe in the final series of HBO series Game of Thrones. Killed by Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) in an epic moment, he was defeated by the army of the living in the Battle of Winterfell. But now the series is returning for a prequel series, there are some hints that he could be back.

Will the Night King return in the prequel series?

First introduced in season four of HBO series Game of Thrones, the Night King was the leader of the dreaded army of the dead known as the White Walkers.

In season six it was revealed in a flashback how one of the First Men was turned into the Night King.

This happened after he was captured by the Children of the Forest and touched with a dragonglass dagger.

In George R.R. Martin’s novels, it was also revealed that this was done in order to help protect the forest dwellers from the First Men who has waged war on them.

However, they eventually broke free of this control and became the most feared creatures in Westeros.

This flashback was said to take place thousands of years before the events of the HBO series.

But now a new prequel series is being filmed, which will explore that exact time period.

The as yet untitled HBO show which has the working title of Bloodmoon is currently being developed by writer George RR Martin and Jane Goldman.

HBO revealed in a synopsis: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

“From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

This synopsis implies that viewers will see the origins of how the White Walkers came to be.

Given that viewers know that the Night King is key to their origin, it seems almost certain that he will appear in some form.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly writer George R.R. Martin confirmed that this will take place around the time known as the Long Night.

This was a period when the White Walkers descended on Westeros bringing with them darkness and freezing temperatures.

Martin has also confirmed that the White walkers will be making an appearance in the new series.
