Most of the characters on House of the Dragon have only grown harder as the Dance has dragged on. Alicent, according to showrunner Ryan Condal, is the exception.
Speaking after the Season 3 finale on the Pilot TV Podcast, he singled her out as the one person who has seen both power and its loss, and who has already begun to step back from revenge.
Quick read:
- Condal says Alicent is a person with proper experience
- She’s trained enough to make the right choices
- He’s certain that Alicent does not possess vindictiveness anymore
Alicent’s experience
Condal addressed Alicent’s place in the story and what lies ahead for her. He said,
“But I think where [Alicent] is now, where we find her in the story and certainly where I think she’s going, she’s certainly a person who has the proper experience and training to make the right choices. Even though Alicent could be vindictive about things… we’ll see where it goes from here, based on what happened in the [S3] finale.”

He continued,
“We have seen [Alicent] let go of vindictiveness in a way that other people seem to double down on it as things get darker and that’s where I think you get to see the true nature of a character.”

The comments are less about crowning Alicent and more about the specific path she has already started walking. Across three seasons she has moved from queen and political operator to dowager watching her own influence shrink, her sons spiral, and the war she helped set in motion burn out of her control.
That range; real power followed by its loss, is what Condal means by “proper experience and training.” It is not abstract wisdom. It is lived knowledge of what power costs and what happens when it is used carelessly.
Condal acknowledges Alicent is still capable of vindictiveness, but notes that she has already shown the capacity to release it at moments when others (on both sides) have only hardened. In a story where almost every major figure has responded to loss by escalating, that willingness to step back is, in his view, the clearest window into who she actually is.
The Season 3 finale, he suggests, will decide whether she continues in that direction or returns to older instincts. He is not promising redemption or peace. He is pointing out that Alicent is currently the only major character who has demonstrated she can choose not to dig deeper into the cycle.

Alicent’s journey ahead
With Helaena’s death at the very end of the Season 3 finale, one majorly devastating change is already waiting for Alicent. Her reaction to this event can also decide the course of her further actions.
Condal’s remarks keep the focus on Alicent’s individual choices rather than any larger resolution: she has seen both sides of power, she has already begun to let go of vindictiveness, and the events of the Season 3 finale will show whether that holds.
