US publication Mental Floss laid out a popular fan theory referred to by fans as R + L = J.
It explained: “Jon is not Ned Stark’s b******, but the illegitimate child of Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi) and Rhaegar Targaryen (Wilf Scolding).”
Jon was born Aegon Targaryen, and his true name was kept secret following the barbaric slaughter of the House Targaryen following Robert’s Rebellion.
Jon’s true parents were revealed in a flashback during the season six finale The Dragon and the Wolf, confirming that Lyanna and Rhaegar hid their son away to protect him from Robert Baratheon’s (Mark Addy) hatred of their family.
