Your next TV obsession, Cursed, is hitting Netflix this summer, and it stars none other than Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why. But this time around, she’s traded Hannah Baker’s tapes for Excalibur.
Based on a book series of the same name, the streaming platform’s anticipated summer fantasy series is “a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake,” according to the description on the Netflix press website. Nimue is played by Langford.
“After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword,” the series description continues. “Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.”
Netflix released the first set of images of the show on Twitter to get fans excited:
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cursed writer and executive producer Tom Wheeler described Langford as a “sword-singing badass” who brings “the emotion and humanity to legendary characters without losing the sense of elemental magic and epic stakes.” Um, sold.
In case you aren’t big into all things King Arthur, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table, the story goes that the Lady of the Lake (aka Nimue) gave a young Arthur the mythical sword Excalibur in order to defeat Mordred, a villainous traitor. A lot of drama goes down after that, but you don’t need to be an Arthurian scholar to watch this show.
Based on the pictures alone, Cursed is giving off some serious Game of Thrones and The Witcher vibes, while Nimue sounds like the next Katniss Everdeen. In other words, I’m all in.
Cursed drops on Netflix later this summer.
