Game Of Thrones’ Charles Dance has admitted that he’s had to learn to adjust to being cast as villains.
The 73-year-old, best known for playing Tywin Lannister in the fantasy series, has become iconic for his more evil roles – including a James Bond villain.
But he admits that while people recognise him for his sinister characters, he has become perhaps a little too well known for it.
‘A lot of the time if you do something reasonably well, you’re asked to do it again,’ he admitted.
‘I’ve got to earn a living so I try to ring the changes as much as I can. But we’re all seen to be certain types of actors.
‘I’ll read that I tend to play villains, and I do. But there was a time when I was a romantic lead.’
Charles said that one of the main reasons he chooses the shows that he does is he looks for something unique and ‘quirky’.
‘If I can find a quirk, that’s what I’ll tend to go for,’ he explained. ‘I’ll look at a part on the page and think, “Does this get my juices flowing?”
‘It might be that it doesn’t, but then I think there’s something I can do with it that so I take the role.
‘I just like working really, to be honest.’
Charles is now about to appear in the latest ITV drama, The Singapore Grip, where he plays a powerful aristocrat, Mr Webb, trying to train his son Matthew (Luke Treadaway) in the family business.
However, Matthew has his own problems in the World War II period drama, as he finds himself entangled in a love triangle.
The Singapore Grip airs Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
