Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon may have a rather different feel to it, as it’s been confirmed that the show’s primary filming location will not be the same as that of its parent show.

Thrones‘ production was predominantly based in Northern Ireland – although filming also took place in countries including Croatia, Iceland and Malta – but House of the Dragon will be based at Leavesden Studios in Watford instead, according to UK Production News (via Redanian Intelligence).

It is of course possible that House of the Dragon will also film in other locations, including potentially Northern Ireland, but its base will be Leavesden, which has hosted production of movies including Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Far from Home and the Harry Potter series.

House of the Dragon is based on George RR Martin’s companion book Fire & Blood and takes place 300 years before Game of Thrones. It will chart the rise of House Targaryen – the house which Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) belonged to – and is expected to explore the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of Dragons.

HBO has ordered a 10-episode first season, with The Outsider star Paddy Considine recently being cast as King Viserys Targaryen. Described as warm and kind, Viserys is chosen by the lords of Westeros to take the throne but he might not necessarily be the right person to rule.

Miguel Sapochnik – who has directed six Thrones episodes – and Ryan Condal will be showrunners on the series and they will also serve as executive producers alongside George RR Martin and Vince Gerardis. Production on the spin-off is due to begin in 2021.

It was confirmed late last year that another planned spin-off, Age of Heroes starring Naomi Watts, which would have been set thousands of years before the events of Thrones, has not been picked up to series after shooting a pilot episode.

House of the Dragon will air on HBO. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
