Emilia Clarke names her dream stage roles

Emila Clarke is delightful (as per usual) talking about the magic of the stage, and names the dream roles she most wants to play later in her career.

Most theaters are shuttered right now, people not being overly eager to sit near strangers for extended periods of time while the coronavirus tears across the globe. But it won’t be like that forever, and in the meantime, the stars of the stage are doing what they can to keep the magic of the theater alive.

For instance, Vogue talked to several big-name stage actors — including a couple of Game of Thrones alums — about what the theater means to them, and their answers have us wishing we could go take in a show or two right now:

Both Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) are among the actors polled (we’ve also got heavy-hitters like Andrew Scott and Jude Law in there). Clarke, always effervescent and entertaining, has plenty of great insights into the theater experience. Having trouble learning your lines? Just do what she does and read them to your oven. (Varma, meanwhile, “f**king hates learning lines,” which is also respectable.) She also tells a great story about when she was playing Holly Golightly in a stage version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, had to walk across the stage naked with a towel around her waist after a bathtub scene, tripped, and got some encouraging words from the crew members in the rigging above. Her American accent is not to be missed.

Also interesting: Clarke’s “dream roles” to play on stage include Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire and Lady MacBeth from MacBeth. Yes, I would pay to see Emilia Clarke do a southern accent.

In the end, Clarke described the theater as “Raw, electric and home.” I love how clearly she passionate about this stuff she is. “It’s how you relate, it’s how you communicate with someone else, it’s how you feel empathy.”

Hopefully she and other actors will be treading the boards again soon.
