Roku is in talks to buy the rights to Quibi’s content, so there may be life left for the mobile-only streaming service yet.
Quibi, the streaming service where you watch 10-minute episodes of original shows all on your phone, recently shut its doors after failing to gain traction following a weak launch early in 2020. Perhaps they thought everyone being at home during the pandemic would work in their favor, but despite some quality shows and heavy-hitting actors, it never took off.
Before it closed, Quibi fought tooth and nail for anyone to buy their company and content, but it didn’t work. However, it looks like Quibi is still hanging on with what little fight they have left. According to The Wall Street Journal, Roku is in talks to buy the rights to Quibi’s content.
If this plan actually goes through, I might be one of the very few people out there who would be excited about it. Sure, not every Quibi show was spectacular, but they had some hidden gems in there which I would love to see return. After all, Most Dangerous Game starring Liam Hemsworth snagged two Emmy nominations earlier this year, so it wasn’t all bad.
The details of the deal are still fuzzy. We don’t know which shows would continue or which stars return. But whatever happens, I’m glad to see that Quibi still has some fight left in it and will be curious to see how this plays out in the coming days and months ahead.
