George RR Martin will join forces with Marvel to produce a new series of comic books, shortly after news broke that House of the Dragon has wrapped filming.
The Game of Thrones writer said working with the superhero franchise titan was a ‘privilege’ and brought him ‘no end of joy.’
The comics will be based on superhero anthology series Wild Cards, which was master-minded and edited by Martin.
Wild Cards tells the story of an alternate history where Earth is home to super-powered individuals and spans more than 25 novels and 20 short stories.
It was written by more than 40 authors over three decades, and the limited series, Wild Cards: Drawing Of The Cards, is due to be released on June 1.
‘As my fans may already know, the Wild Cards World holds a special place in my heart,’ announced Martin.
‘So to have the privilege of announcing that an industry titan like Marvel is going to produce the narrative from the beginning as a comic book brings me no end of joy.’
Game of Thrones, based on Martin’s most well-known work A Song of Ice and Fire, ended its hugely successful run in 2019 and HBO is currently developing spin-offs, including a prequel series set to air this year, House of the Dragon.
The 10-episode series has recently finished filming, as announced by Martin on his personal blog.
The series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and stars the likes of Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke.
Martin shared on his blog: ‘Exciting news out of London — I am informed that shooting has WRAPPED for the first season of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON.
‘Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them.
‘Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post production work. But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do.’
He added a hint at the question fans will all be asking: ‘So when will you get to see it, you ask? When will the dragons dance? I wish I could tell you.
‘Lots of work remains to be done, as I said, and covid makes planning difficult. This spring? Unlikely. Maybe summer? Could be. Fall? Who knows?
‘You’ll know when we do.’
House of The Dragon is coming to HBO Max in the US and NOW in the UK.
