Last week, HBO debuted its new comedy Our Flag Means Death, about a “gentleman pirate” named Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) who leaves his cushy life as an English aristocrat to become a pirate on the high seas. It’s a fun show, and it has more than a few familiar faces.
In particular, Game of Thrones fans through they recognized a couple of transplants from Westeros. Today we’re here to tell you that you’re not crazy: yes, that is Daenerys Targaryen’s dead husband Hizdahr zo Loraq as Frenchie, the pirate with a penchant for singing about the crew’s adventures.
Frenchie is played by Joel Fry, who was better known for appearing in sitcoms before he got the role of a Meereenese nobleman who entered into a political marriage with the Mother of Dragons on the fifth season of Game of Thrones…and who was stabbed to death by the Sons of the Harpy not long after. So appearing on a comedy is him returning to his roots.
Kristian Nairn (Hodor from Game of Thrones) is also on Our Flag Means Death
And Fry isn’t the only Game of Thrones alum to appear on the show. Kristian Nairn, who played Hodor on the fantasy show, is Wee John Feeney, another crewmate on the Revenge. And this time he gets to say more than just his name.
A new episode of Our Flag Means Death airs tonight. Who knows what other Game of Thrones castaways might show up?
