For millions of fans, Harry Potter is a source of comfort. For Kit Harington, it became something even more important.

The Game of Thrones star recently revealed that the Harry Potter audiobooks played a significant role in his sobriety journey, helping him quiet his mind during difficult nights after giving up alcohol. The revelation comes at an interesting moment, as Harington is also preparing to officially enter the Wizarding World himself.

Quick read:

  • Harry Potter audiobooks aided Harington’s sobriety.
  • He listens to them every night.
  • Harington is joining HBO’s Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter became part of Harington’s nightly routine

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington explained that restless nights became even harder after he got sober.

“My brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult like and my brain doesn’t turn off.”

That’s when he turned to the audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry.

“When I got sober that got especially bad. So I started listening to Harry Potter audiobooks, and now they’re the thing I listen to every night.”

The actor said the series now holds a deeply personal place in his life because of the comfort it provided during that period.

For fans of both franchises, it’s a touching connection between two of the most influential fantasy worlds of the modern era.

From listener to Hogwarts professor

The timing is especially fitting because Harington is no longer just a fan of the Wizarding World.

After previously voicing Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, Harington is set to reprise the role in season 2 of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series.

The actor admitted joining the project was an easy decision.

“When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, ‘I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did.’ I’m fully supportive of it. And then I got called to be in it, and that was just a very simple, ‘Yes, please!’”

That’s a much stronger update than the old fan speculation that occasionally linked him to the role. Harington isn’t merely rumored to play Lockhart anymore. Reports now state that he has been cast as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor for the series’ second season.
