Upon the airing of the first episode of House of the Dragon, many viewers were struck by the scene in which King Viserys’ Small Council of advisors was seated at the Red Keep. Each stone thrown before each member of the council were a different color, signifying something important. So, what’s up with these balls?

The balls amplified the significance of Council Members’
Jim Clay and Claire Nie Richards, the production designer and set decorator respectively, came up with the idea. According to Richards, it symbolized the council’s involvement in the meeting. In regards to this, showrunner Ryan Condal echoed that:
“I thought it was really cool. It’s a way of visualizing the set formality of the Small Council chamber. It’s enjoyable; we should have things that we like in this world.”
With that being said, Condal added his Game of Thrones’ favorite scenes into the Council scene. But apparently, he found out that writing a scene with couple of people are sitting around table would be too hectic. Thus, he added some lucrative elements to enhance the overall impression of the Small Council part.
