Production has officially started for the highly anticipated HBO Original drama series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in Belfast, Ireland. The series, based on George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, serves as a prequel to the events of Game of Thrones and is set a century before the epic saga. Max has just announced the cast of this new Game of Thrones prequel.

Here’s the official synopsis of the show:
“A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
The newly revealed cast members include:
Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen
Seen in: True Detective (2014), The Nevers (2021) and Hope Gap (2019).
Playing: Prince Aerion Targaryen who was also known as Aerion the Monstrous, or Aerion Brightflame was the second son of King Maekar I Targaryen.
Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen
Seen in: Dalgliesh (2021), The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) and Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned (2015).
Playing: Prince Baelor Targaryen who was known as Baelor Breakspear, was the eldest son and heir of King Daeron II Targaryen and Queen Myriah Martell and he was the Prince of Dragonstone.
Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle
Seen in: Servant (2023), Alexander (2020) and Swift Street (2024).
Playing: Tanselle who was also called Tanselle Too-Tall, was a Dornish puppeteer during the reign of Daeron II Targaryen.
Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon
Seen in: Gentlemen (2024), I Hate Suzie (2020) and Lovesick (2014).
Playing: Lyonel Baratheon was also known as the Laughing Storm, and he was the Lord of Storm’s End and the head of House Baratheon during the reign of King Aegon V. Targaryen.
Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen
Seen in: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Legend (2015) and The Counselor (2013).
Playing: Maekar I Targaryen was the fourteenth Targaryen king to sit the Iron Throne. He was the fourth son of King Daeron II Targaryen, and was the Prince of Summerhall.
These talented actors will join the previously announced cast, which features Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.
Sarah Adina Smith, known for her work on “Lessons In Chemistry,” “Hanna,” and “Buster’s Mal Heart,” has been confirmed to direct three of the six episodes. Alongside her, the previously announced director and executive producer Owen Harris will also helm three episodes.
The show will have George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker as the writers and executive producers, with additional executive producers Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw.
With such a talented team and an exciting lineup of actors, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is shaping up to be another solid Game of Thrones spinoff project. Stay tuned for more updates as the production continues.
