Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones, and dragons. If those three don’t stir curiosity, what will? In a refreshingly candid confession on the Dish Podcast, the actress admitted she’s “never watched” the globally beloved HBO saga that catapulted her to stardom. Known for its blood-soaked betrayals, flying beasts, and ruthless dynasties, Game of Thrones built an empire of fans but Turner? She lived it, not watched it.
Quick read:
- Sophie Turner says she’s never watched Game of Thrones, calling it “warring families… there’s dragons.”
- Watching herself caused emotional stress, sometimes leading to “a two-month bout of depression.”
- She now stars in Joan, a mini-series about a real-life jewel thief.

Sophie Turner isn’t one to sugarcoat things, not even when it comes to the show that catapulted her to global fame. During her recent podcast appearance, the Game of Thrones star stripped down the fantasy epic with her signature dry wit and honesty. Reflecting on her time playing Sansa Stark, Turner said with a sly smile:
“I know what my character does, which isn’t very nice.”
But it was what followed that had fans both laughing and nodding in agreement. When asked to explain the plot of the wildly complex HBO series, Turner deadpanned:
“Warring families, fighting for the throne. There’s dragons. That’s about it.”
Simple? Yes. Wrong? Not at all. Turner, who played the stoic and sharp-tongued Sansa Stark for nearly a decade, revealed she never actually viewed the full saga. Despite delivering one of the most memorable arcs on the show, she admitted on the Dish Podcast,
I’ve also never watched the show.
Rather than binge-watch dragons and death scenes, Turner said she only followed her own character’s journey. Her take on the show?
Warring families fighting for the throne… there’s dragons.
Game of Thrones premieres would give Sophie Turner depression
Brutally concise, yet weirdly spot-on. Turner went on to share that watching herself during premieres triggered emotional stress. She said:
It would send me into a two-month bout of depression.
For someone who poured years into a high-stakes role, her avoidance of self-analysis makes sense. Criticizing your own global performance is a burden not everyone is cut out for.
After Thrones wrapped in 2019, Turner didn’t idle. She recently led Joan, a mini-series based on the life of a notorious jewel thief. While she may not revisit her Game of Thrones days onscreen, she continues shaping a career that demands attention for reasons far beyond dragons and thrones.
