House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that work on season 4 is officially underway. Speaking on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast, Condal revealed that while season 3 is deep in post‑production, the writers’ room has already “begun in earnest” on scripts for the next chapter of the Dance of the Dragons.

Quick read:

  • Season 3 has wrapped filming and is now in full post‑production with Condal overseeing edits and VFX.

  • Condal says writing on House of the Dragon season 4 “began in earnest a couple months ago,” with progress on “all fronts.”

  • HBO has already seen early cuts of season 3 and is “very happy,” while reshoots are planned for early 2026 as part of the normal schedule.

House of the Dragon Season 3 in post, Season 4 on the page

Condal explained that season 3 wrapped filming in late October 2025 and is now in full post‑production, with his days consumed by “cuts, editing, visual effects, all those fun things.” He described this phase as “way crazier” than the shoot, because once cameras stop rolling the production shrinks to a core team of around 25 people split between post and the writing office, putting most of the burden back on his shoulders as showrunner.

At the same time, Condal confirmed that season 4 writing started a couple of months ago, roughly in sync with the end of principal photography on season 3. “We began in earnest a couple months ago,” he said, adding that they are “making progress on, you know, kind of all fronts” as HBO reviews early cuts of season 3 and the writers shape the next run.

The studio is reportedly “very happy” with the episodes they have already seen, giving the team confidence as they push ahead into the back half of the series.

Reshoots planned and HBO already watching season 3

Condal also pulled back the curtain on how planned reshoots fit into the production schedule. Even though principal photography on season 3 is done, he said the team is “already looking at” bits they want to adjust and expects to tackle reshoots in early 2026, noting that these pickups are baked into the schedule and budget from the start and won’t delay the season.

Crucially, HBO has already received early cuts of season 3 episodes, and Condal says the response has been encouraging. “They’re very happy, which is always nice to hear,” he joked, framing the network’s reaction as a morale boost while the staff juggle post‑production and the new scripts.

For fans, the update means that while the wait for season 3 continues into 2026, momentum behind the scenes is strong—and the creative team isn’t pausing before diving into season 4, which Condal has elsewhere confirmed will be the final season of the series.
