First season excitement vs second season reality

Fabien Frankel explained the difference between approaching the two seasons. Season 1 felt fresh as he was stepping into a brand-new character with original material. By season 2, however, the vibe had shifted completely. When asked if he had moments of disbelief reading Criston’s increasingly questionable decisions, Frankel laughed and admitted:

“Yeah, I mean, yeah… you’re always reading the script going, ‘Oh buddy, not again, dude.’”

His honest response drew laughter from the audience and captured how many viewers felt watching Criston’s arc unfold.

A personal path amid controversy

Despite his initial “not again” reaction, Frankel emphasized that season 2 was ultimately rewarding for him as an actor. He highlighted how the writers gave Criston his own storyline instead of solely serving other characters. He referenced writer Sara Hess’ description of the show’s limited POV characters, noting he was “lucky enough in the second season to kind of get my own path.”

That path included leading a military campaign, albeit an ill-fated one, which Frankel described as “cool to lead a war.”

Criston Cole: complex and divisive

Ser Criston Cole remains one of House of the Dragon’s most polarizing figures. From kingsguard knight to Lord Commander, his journey is filled with rage, ambition, loyalty, and repeated poor choices that often escalate the conflict between the Greens and Blacks.

Frankel’s comments at Budapest Comic Con show the actor fully understands why fans react so strongly to Criston. At the same time, he clearly enjoyed exploring the character’s deeper layers and personal agency in season 2. The Budapest Comic Con appearance comes as the cast continues promoting the series ahead of season 3, which is expected to premiere in June 2026.
