For Peter Claffey, Dunk’s journey in The Sworn Sword isn’t just another chapter — it’s his favorite of the three Dunk & Egg novellas. In a new interview with The Playlist, Claffey explained why the second tale resonates so deeply with him, describing it as a tragic love story that forces Dunk into unfamiliar territory. Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts this novella, and Claffey teased how Dunk’s awkward attempts at navigating relationships will bring both humor and heart to the show.

Why The Sworn Sword stands out for Claffey
Claffey explained that The Sworn Sword is his favorite because it pushes Dunk into new territory. Unlike The Hedge Knight, which focused on Dunk’s honor and survival, this story forces him to grapple with emotions and relationships. Claffey described it as a tragic love story, one that challenges Dunk to navigate talking to women — something he admits Dunk is “terrible at.” He also highlighted how Dunk struggles to establish a professional relationship with a woman, which he’s “absolutely awful at.”
Peter Claffey said: “‘The Sworn Sword’ is my favorite novella of the three in the ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ book. It’s a tragic love story. It’s a completely different job for Dunk to navigate. And I suppose he has his first kind of experience with… his first kind of experience with kind of trying to navigate talking and chatting to women, which he’s terrible at, and trying to establish a work relationship with a woman, which he’s absolutely awful at.”
Season 2 cast and quality
Claffey emphasized that shooting Season 2 has been “so much fun,” praising the cast and crew for maintaining the high quality of Season 1. He admitted he didn’t think they could match the first season’s level, but the new additions have impressed him. Claffey specifically mentioned Lucy Boynton and Babou Ceesay as confirmed cast members, noting that everyone who has joined has been “incredible.”
Claffey added: “So yeah, it’s been so much fun to shoot and, so far, everybody that’s come on has been just amazing. I didn’t think we’d be able to ever hit the level of quality of season one, but the people that have come in, I mean, people have been confirmed now, as well as Lucy Boyton and Babou Ceesay. And yeah, just people have come in and just been incredible, incredible.”
