Peter Claffey, the actor cast as the legendary Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has revealed that filming season 2 has been a surprisingly “isolating” experience. In a recent interview with Variety, Claffey spoke candidly about the unique difficulties of bringing George R.R. Martin’s beloved Dunk & Egg novellas to life, particularly the upcoming season based on “The Sworn Sword.”

“A bit more difficult”
While promoting the series, Claffey shared:
“Dunk spends a lot of time on his own… It’s been a little bit isolating. It feels a little bit more difficult.”

He explained that unlike ensemble-heavy shows like Game of Thrones or even season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the second season focuses heavily on Dunk’s solo journey. The story sees the towering knight wandering through the Reach, dealing with personal honour, political intrigue, and internal conflict with limited companions. Claffey added that “The Sworn Sword” is actually his favorite of the three Dunk & Egg novellas, which has helped him push through the challenges:
“It’s my favourite story of the three novellas. So even though it’s been a little bit more difficult, I’m really enjoying it.”
Why season 2 feels different
Season 1 (based on “The Hedge Knight”) featured a strong cast, including Dexter Sol Ansell as young Egg (Aegon V Targaryen), alongside actors like Finn Bennet, Daniel Ings, and Bertie Carvel. The chemistry between Dunk and Egg became one of the show’s biggest strengths. In contrast, season 2 is where Dunk takes service with a minor lord and becomes entangled in a local conflict involving water rights, old grudges, and a complicated romance.

The Irish actor was relatively unknown before landing the role of a lifetime as the 6’9” hedge knight. His towering physical presence and honourable portrayal quickly won over fans when the first teaser and images were released.
Claffey has repeatedly expressed his deep respect for the source material, calling Dunk one of the most noble and relatable characters in Martin’s universe. His commitment to the role includes intense physical training and studying the novellas closely to capture Dunk’s blend of strength, humility, and occasional clumsiness.
