In a new Variety interview, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker has revealed that casting the show’s two lead roles: Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg), was by far the most difficult challenge in bringing George R.R. Martin’s beloved Dunk & Egg stories to television.

Finding Dunk and Egg

When asked by the interviewer what the toughest part of launching the series was, Ira Parker didn’t hesitate and said,

“Casting. Figuring out how to find somebody who was close to seven feet… and an eight-year-old that were going to eat up, you know, 99% of screen time for us. That was tricky!”

He went on to deliver high praise for the two actors ultimately chosen:

“We’re lucky that we found the only two in the whole world that could actually do this appropriately for us.”

This highlights just how crucial and rare the perfect pairing of Peter Claffey (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg) truly is.

Why the casting was so difficult

Dunk is described in the books as an enormous hedge knight, nearly seven feet tall, incredibly strong, but also kind-hearted and somewhat awkward. Egg, on the other hand, is a sharp-witted eight-year-old prince disguised as a squire, full of personality and royal mischief. Finding two actors who could physically as well as personality-wise match the two was no easy task.

Parker’s comments confirm that the production searched globally before landing on Claffey and Ansell, the only duo they felt could authentically embody these iconic characters. Praise coming from the showrunner himself just confirms that Peter and Dexter have done justice to their respective characters.
