He explained that he made the decision as Episode 1 of Season 8 was airing. He spent six weeks in rehab, isolated and without his phone, while the world was watching the finale and reacting to its controversial ending.
“It was a very weird experience… I decided to go to rehab as Episode 1 was airing. And I was there for six weeks, isolated, without my phone.”
Harington described feeling overwhelmed by the intense pressure, the global spotlight, and the demanding press tour that came with the final season. At one point, he simply told himself:
“Actually, I’m checking out. I can’t do this.”
The heavy cost of fame
Harington has been open in the past about struggling with mental health and alcohol, but this is one of his most vulnerable retellings yet. He admitted the sudden fame after years of playing Jon Snow left him exhausted, both physically and emotionally. Despite the challenges, he now looks back on the decision positively, calling it necessary for his well-being. Since then, Harington has married his Game of Thrones co-star Rose Leslie, welcomed two children, and continued building a career with roles in projects like Industry and upcoming films.
A full-circle reunion
The heartfelt conversation between Harington and Dinklage marks one of the most meaningful Game of Thrones reunions in years. The two actors shared the screen for eight seasons, developing one of the show’s most beloved friendships between Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister.
Their Actors on Actors chat touched on everything from the pressures of fame to life after Westeros, showing how far both have come since the show ended in 2019. Kit Harington’s honesty about his struggles has resonated deeply with fans, many of whom praised him for speaking openly about mental health and the hidden costs of sudden stardom.
