While promoting House of the Dragon Season 3, showrunner Ryan Condal has given major updates about the future of the series, confirming that Season 4 will be the final season. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Condal revealed that although Season 4 will have a similar number of episodes to previous seasons, the ambition level is being significantly raised.
“It will be the biggest season we have made, for sure.”

- He confirms once again that it will indeed be the final season
- He hasn’t confirmed if he will take on more Game of Thrones projects or not
Condal is currently writing Season 4 even before Season 3 has aired, describing the process as
“A snake eating its tail.”

He admitted the show has been an all-consuming project, but he approaches endings with a healthy mindset:
“I’m an ‘all good things come to an end’ type person.”
Season 4 production timeline
Filming for Season 4 is expected to begin in spring 2027, following the usual pattern dictated by British weather and daylight hours. Condal noted that production must “straddle the British summer,” starting in spring and wrapping before the days get too short again. The massive prep time required for each season makes the schedule relatively fixed.
The end of Westeros for Condal?
When asked about future Game of Thrones spin-offs, Condal appeared to close the door on his involvement in the Westeros universe after Season 4:
“Anything is possible but I think I have said what I have to say about Westeros.”
However, he is far from leaving HBO. Last month, he signed a major overall deal with the network through 2029 to develop new projects, marking the beginning of his “next chapter.”
Season 3: “The belly of the beast”
Condal described Season 3 (premiering June 21) as the “point of no return” for the Dance of the Dragons:
“There is no turning back. With that comes a gravity, a tension, a darkness… a sense of inevitability.”
He called Episode 1 “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made,” thanks to the enormous Battle of the Gullet sequence, which features massive practical sets, two huge water tanks, and intense ship combat.
As the series heads toward its conclusion in Season 4, Condal remains focused on delivering a satisfying and epic finale. With increased ambition and the war reaching its most brutal phase, House of the Dragon is preparing to go out on the biggest scale possible.
