In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Toussaint explained that Corlys deeply sees himself in Alyn, particularly in his stubborn independence and refusal to accept easy help.
“The great thing about Alyn and the great thing about Corlys is that Corlys sees himself in Alyn, in Alyn’s refusal to take a helping hand in his steadfastness. Because what Corlys would expect is that he sort of goes, ‘All right, now I’m ready to acknowledge you as my son.’ And he expects Alyn to go, ‘Oh thank god. Great. Yeah.’ But no, Alyn’s like, ‘H*** no, I don’t need you. Where were you 20 years ago?’”
This rejection is proving to be a major wake-up call for Corlys. Instead of gratitude, he’s met with resentment and that tension is pushing him to reassess his priorities.

“And so that forces, I think, Corlys to reassess what is important, and what is important is not the trinkets and that stuff. It is about being there. And I hope that he’s on his way to learning that lesson and I think he is.”

Losing Rhaenys: Corlys’ greatest loss
Toussaint also highlighted how the death of Rhaenys Targaryen has hit Corlys harder than any other loss, even the presumed death of his son Laenor.
“I think, of course, to lose a child is a terrible thing, and it is for him, but I think the more seismic change for him is losing his wife… The one time that Corlys is really truly himself and unguarded, the only times that ever happens are with his wife. And with her gone now, he doesn’t have that.”
Throughout the first two seasons, Corlys was relentlessly focused on legacy — pushing the Velaryon name closer to the Iron Throne and ensuring his family’s power would outlive him. Now, without Rhaenys and facing the consequences of his past actions, he must finally confront the human cost of that ambition.
Alyn as Laenor’s true replacement
The interview strongly suggests that Alyn is positioned as the true spiritual successor to Laenor in Corlys’ eyes. While Addam has already claimed a dragon (Seasmoke), Corlys sees in Alyn the same grit and self-made determination he respects and recognizes in himself. This father-son conflict, combined with Corlys’ guilt and grief, sets up a rich emotional storyline for Season 3 alongside the massive battles like the Battle of the Gullet.
