House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 answers one of the biggest questions surrounding Rhaena Targaryen after the Battle of the Gullet. While Rhaenyra mourns devastating losses and the war takes another tragic turn, Rhaena makes a decision that keeps her far away from Dragonstone. Rather than completing the mission entrusted to her, she remains in the Vale after pursuing the wild dragon Sheepstealer, knowing that her absence may have contributed to disastrous consequences for the queen’s family.

Why Rhaena fears returning to Dragonstone

Rhaena was originally tasked with escorting Rhaenyra’s youngest sons, Aegon and Viserys, aboard a merchant ship bound for Pentos. Instead, she abandoned that responsibility in order to search for and claim Sheepstealer, believing the wild dragon could strengthen Rhaenyra’s cause during the Dance of the Dragons.
However, the Battle of the Gullet changes everything. Following the devastating attack and the death of Jacaerys, Rhaena understands that her decision could place her directly in Rhaenyra’s anger. During The Official Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon, host Jason Concepcion explained why Lady Jeyne Arryn expects Rhaena to stay away.
“Lady Jeyne brings the news that Jace is dead and I think she’s quite right to believe that Rhaenyra is going to really want to kill whoever she feels is responsible… I think she’s just like whoever’s riding Sheepstealer is going down.”
The comment reflects how dangerous Rhaena’s situation has become. Whether or not Rhaenyra would truly carry out such punishment, the fear alone gives Rhaena every reason to avoid returning to Dragonstone immediately.
The Vale becomes Rhaena’s only refuge

Rhaena’s circumstances leave her with very few options. Returning to Dragonstone could mean facing the queen’s grief at its most volatile, while continuing her journey elsewhere offers little protection during an expanding civil war. Podcast host Greta Johnsen highlighted how desperate Rhaena’s position has become.
“Partly it’s also wild to think about like just the level of desperation that Rhaena would have to be at to want to go back to the Vale cuz she just has nowhere else to go.”
The observation captures an important emotional layer in the episode. Rhaena is no longer simply chasing a dragon. She is attempting to survive the consequences of a decision that cannot be undone. Sheepstealer may eventually prove valuable to Rhaenyra’s campaign, but that possibility offers little comfort while the queen grieves the loss of another son.
