Rhaenyra Targaryen finally claimed the Iron Throne in the second episode of House of the Dragon Season 3. Yet winning the throne hasn’t brought her peace. Enemies still surround her. Rival claimants continue to challenge her rule, while many smallfolk in King’s Landing remain loyal to the Greens.
Rhaenyra now faces an impossible balancing act. She wants to honor her father Viserys’ legacy by ruling justly, but she also knows she must crush any threat to her claim – including those spreading rumors that undermine her authority.

What happens in the latest episode?
The latest episode shows growing hostility toward Rhaenyra among a few in King’s Landing. Through Ulf the White, the Queen and the viewers learn that some commoners have begun calling her the “Queen of Bastards.” The insult directly attacks the legitimacy of her children and her claim to the throne.
Determined to silence the slander, Rhaenyra orders Ser Luthor Largent and the Gold Cloaks to track down those painting the words across the city and bring them to justice.

Fans of Game of Thrones may recognize echoes of Cersei Lannister, who also reacted harshly when a commoner mocked her. If Rhaenyra continues down a similar path, she risks turning the very people she hopes to rule against her.
Why Rhaenyra lashes out at her own people
King Viserys I Targaryen named Rhaenyra as his chosen heir, but many lords abandoned her claim after his death and decided to support her half-brother Aegon instead. Questions surrounding the parentage of Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey only fueled the rumors against her. More recently, her decision to elevate Hugh Hammer, Ulf the White, and Addam of Hull as dragonriders has added another layer of controversy.
Now that she finally sits the Iron Throne, protecting the legitimacy of her rule has become more important than ever. That makes the title “Queen of Bastards” more than a simple insult – it threatens the foundation of her reign.
Ironically, this anger is directed at the same people she recently tried to help by distributing food throughout King’s Landing.
Reflecting on Rhaenyra’s actions in the official House of the Dragon Season 3 podcast, executive producer David Hancock explained:
“Sometimes when everything feels like it’s conspiring, there’s an instinct to lash out. And seeing those words, ‘Queen of Bastards,’ …with a city that welcomed her with open arms… I think what she perceives as the fickleness of the people, like, ‘F*ck you.’”
He added:
“She sends Luthor Largent and the Gold Cloaks out to… to take names. And it’s pretty impulsive… and not a very kind thing to do to your people… justifiable, of course, as all things that powerful leaders are asked to do are.”
The consequences of Rhaenyra’s decision remain unclear. One thing, however, seems certain: after everything she has lost to reach the Iron Throne, she will do whatever it takes to protect her claim.
