Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) hits a new low in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4, which hit small screens on July 12. Much to his humiliation, Aegon has no option but to become the “piss boy” in this episode. However, that might actually be a good thing for him.
Quick read:
- Aegon Targaryen becoming the “piss boy” might change his personality for good.
- It will be interesting to see how this changes him as a person.
- Writer David Hancock believes Aegon “can’t help but grow” after such humiliation.
The humiliation Aegon Targaryen feels in House of the Dragon Season 3 can help develop his character
Aegon Targaryen and Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) arrive at Rook’s Rest in Episode 4, Tumbleton. Aegon breaks down in tears upon seeing his fallen dragon, Sunfyre, while Larys tries to bargain for their lives. When the duo finally reaches the garrison, they find it in complete chaos.
A lowerborn lord assigns Aegon and Larys the roles of “piss boy” and “latrine boy.” The former resists, but ultimately has no choice. On the official House of the Dragon Season 3 podcast, host Greta Johnsen reflects on how this change affects Aegon.

She said, “That idea of being a deeply unlikable person initially, and, you know, hitting that low point, and then having to recover, and seeing what sort of person they end up as on the other side of that, I think is really interesting.”
Before Aemond’s vicious attack, Aegon was an arrogant king. To some degree, he has still held on to that ego. However, the humiliation he is feeling now might change him for the better.
House of the Dragon Season 3 writer David Hancock on how Aegon “can’t help but grow” after this humiliation
Aegon’s humiliation does not end at being the “piss boy.” When he does not get lunch at his new shelter, he loses his cool and throws a fit. That does not end well for him as the lowerborn lord makes him beg for his life by kissing his filthy, shoe-clad foot.
When asked if this will force Aegon to grow, the writer of this episode, Executive Producer David Hancock, said, “Aegon never had to deal with the prospect of humiliation. And now he is having all those things. So I think he can’t help but grow… it’s die or grow. And it might be one of those. Because if he doesn’t grow, if he has a strop and tells someone he’s the king, he’ll die.”
So far, Aegon is almost always on the brink of screaming that he is the king, but has refrained from doing so by some miracle. Whether or not he will be able to complete this journey without revealing his true identity remains to be seen.
