House of the Dragon Season 3 makes one of its biggest departures from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood by giving Rhaena Targaryen, rather than Nettles, the role of Sheepstealer’s rider. The change has ripple effects beyond the battlefield, particularly for Daemon and Rhaenyra’s marriage.
In Episode 4, Daemon chooses to conceal the truth about Rhaena’s bond with the wild dragon, creating a layer of deception that did not exist in the source material. Showrunner Ryan Condal has now explained why the series made this creative decision, revealing that the goal was to preserve the emotional conflict associated with Sheepstealer while adapting it to the show’s existing characters.
Why Rhaena replaced Nettles in the story

In Fire & Blood, Sheepstealer is claimed by Nettles, a young dragonseed whose relationship with Daemon ultimately creates serious tension between him and Rhaenyra. Rather than introducing Nettles in Season 3, the HBO series gives that storyline to Daemon’s daughter, Rhaena, who has long struggled with being the only member of her immediate family without a dragon.
Explaining the creative decision, Condal said the writers first identified the emotional function that Sheepstealer’s rider served in the story before deciding how to adapt it.

“We knew that Sheepstealer’s rider, that character causes extreme strife for Daemon and Rhaenyra’s relationship. And that was sort of the place that we started in. We felt in Season 2 that we were telling the story of the dragonseeds pretty completely and robustly in terms of all the different walks of life that come to riding dragons.”
Rather than adding another major dragonseed character, the writers chose to build on Rhaena’s established journey. Since Season 1, her desire to become a dragonrider has been a defining part of her identity, making Sheepstealer’s arrival a natural extension of her arc while keeping the focus on the Targaryen family.

Daemon’s lie creates a new conflict with Rhaenyra

Although the show changes who claims Sheepstealer, Condal emphasized that it preserves the central dramatic purpose of the storyline: creating strain between Daemon and Rhaenyra. Instead of jealousy surrounding Nettles, Season 3 introduces a different source of conflict by having Daemon hide Rhaena’s actions from his wife.
That decision transforms the relationship dynamics at the heart of the story. Daemon’s deception is no longer tied to an outsider entering his orbit but to protecting his own daughter, forcing him to choose between honesty with Rhaenyra and loyalty to his family. It also raises the stakes for future episodes, as the consequences of Rhaena’s bond with the wild dragon become intertwined with trust inside Team Black.
By reshaping the Sheepstealer storyline around Rhaena, House of the Dragon Season 3 retains the emotional tension that defined the original plot while grounding it in characters viewers have followed since the series began. According to Condal, the adaptation was designed to keep the focus on the Targaryen family while ensuring that Sheepstealer’s rider remains a catalyst for conflict between Daemon and Rhaenyra.
