Daemon Targaryen has always been a man of action, a warrior who thrives in chaos and decisive moments. But in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 6, his presence at Harrenhal’s war councils feels out of place. In the “Inside the Episode” feature, Matt Smith explained that Daemon’s behavior — mocking, disruptive, almost childish — is not random. It is his way of coping with the frustration of being stuck in meetings that do not suit his nature, while Rhaenyra searches for strategies to outmaneuver the Hightowers.
Quick read
- Matt Smith reflects on Daemon’s behavior.
- Says Daemon acts like a “petulant, annoying child.”
- He feels out of place at war councils.
Coping through disruption
Smith described how he often questioned Daemon’s presence in these scenes, noting that the character simply does not belong in strategy meetings. That disconnect shaped his performance:
“At times, I wonder, ‘Why? Why is he at these meetings?’ I just don’t feel like Daemon would be there. So the only way through it is for him to be a petulant, annoying child.”
This framing makes Daemon’s antics less about immaturity and more about survival. He cannot fight, so he lashes out in the only way available — by undermining the seriousness of the council.
A man of action, trapped in strategy
The frustration runs deeper than just boredom. Daemon is defined by his need to act, to move, to strike. Being forced into patience and politics suffocates him, especially as Rhaenyra searches for a tactical edge against the Hightowers. Smith explained this contrast clearly:

“He’s a man of action. That’s a deep frustration for him. And meanwhile, Rhaenyra is just looking for something to win the battle against the Hightowers.”
The tension between Daemon’s restlessness and Rhaenyra’s determination highlights their growing divide. His “petulant child” act is not just a quirk — it is a symptom of being trapped in a role that does not suit him.
