As House of the Dragon heads into its fourth and final season, showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal has made it clear that his time in Westeros is coming to a definitive end.

In a new interview with Collider following the Season 3 finale, Condal was asked which other era of Targaryen history he might be interested in adapting after the Dance of the Dragons concludes; whether that be Aegon’s Conquest or something further down the line.

His answer left little room for interpretation.

“I have really said all I have to or need to say about dragons and Targaryens and thrones,” Condal stated.

While he acknowledged that the fall of the Targaryen dynasty (the story of Aerys II, the Mad King) remains one of the most interesting tales left untold from a Targaryen perspective, he made it clear he has no plans to be the one to tell it.

Closing the book on the Dance

Condal’s comments come as House of the Dragon prepares for its final chapter. Season 3 ended with major shifts in the war: the bloody Battle of Tumbleton, Rhaenyra’s increasingly ruthless grip on power, the death of Helaena, and the return of Aegon and Sunfyre. The stage is now fully set for the last act of the civil war.

For Condal, that final season will also mark the end of his own long journey with the material. After years of adapting George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and navigating the complex, tragic story of the Targaryens’ self-destruction, he appears ready to step away from the world of dragons, thrones, and royal bloodlines.

Looking Ahead

While Condal is firm that he is done with this particular universe, his comments still tease how rich the remaining Targaryen history is. However, his contract with HBO remains till 2029. So, fans might get to see him trying his hands on some other kind of project.

For now, his focus remains solely on delivering a worthy conclusion to House of the Dragon. Once Season 4 wraps, however, it seems Ryan Condal will finally be leaving the dragons behind.
