One of the most dramatic moments in the House of the Dragon Season 3 finale was the tense reunion between the Green brothers; King Aegon II and Prince Aemond. The scene does not appear in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, yet showrunner Ryan Condal has defended the choice as both logical and essential for the story’s final stretch.
In an interiew with Ringer Verse, Condal explained why the writers decided to bring the two brothers face-to-face and how the moment serves as a crucial setup for Season 4.
Quick read:
- Producers added an Aegon-Aemond reunion that wasn’t in the books
- The showrunner wanted to establish Aegon-Aemond vs Rhaenyra-Daemon
- This will be the Greens vs Blacks setup for the final season
Setting up the final season
Talking about the differences between the books and the show,
“We wanted to tee up what was to come. The confrontation was designed to re-establish the central conflict on the Green side just as the series heads into its conclusion.”

According to the showrunner, the story has now narrowed to its core pairings: Rhaenyra and Daemon on the Black side, and Aegon and Aemond on the Green side.
“You have Rhaenyra and Daemon at the core on the Black side, you have Aemond and Aegon at the core on the Green side. It feels like that was the right place to set us up… vaulting us into Season 4, because that’s largely who the story is going to be about at this point in the telling.”

Addressing the book deviation
Condal also addressed the fact that the meeting is not recorded in the source material. He said that the absence of the scene in the text does not mean it never happened.
“This is a good example of, though it isn’t in the book, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it couldn’t have happened, simply because Aegon sort of disappears from the record. We know he reappears… and we know that he doesn’t interact with Aemond again in the text, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t. It just means that the historians writing the book didn’t have a record of it.”
In Fire & Blood, Aegon’s whereabouts become foggy for a period after certain events, creating narrative space that the show has chosen to fill.
Why is the scene important
By placing Aegon and Aemond opposite each other in the finale, the series reinforces the fractured yet still dangerous nature of the Green faction. Their dynamic, filled with resentment, rivalry, and uneasy alliance, is now positioned as one of the central engines of the final season.
The moment also mirrors the long-standing, complicated relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon, creating a clear structural balance as the Dance of the Dragons enters its endgame.
As production on Season 4 prepares to begin, Condal’s comments suggest the writers are intentionally sharpening the focus on these four characters. The Aegon-Aemond meeting was not just a dramatic beat for the Season 3 finale; it was a deliberate launchpad for the story still to come.
