House of the Dragon star Ewan Mitchell aka Aemond Targaryen has picked up a Best Actor nomination at the City Lights Film Festival for his performance in the short film Still Life.

The film itself also scored nominations for ‘Best Screenplay’ and ‘Best Art Direction,’ giving the project a strong showing at the London-based festival. The nominees were announced by the festival itself.

A different kind of role

Mitchell is best known for playing the intense, one-eyed Prince Aemond Targaryen. Seeing him take on something this offbeat and intimate; a quiet, awkward man who talks to mannequins, is a sharp contrast, and fans have been quick to celebrate the recognition.

In Still Life, Mitchell plays Leo, a lonely retail worker who steals mannequins from the department store where he works and treats them as companions. His carefully controlled world is disrupted when a living, breathing young woman (played by Saura Lightfoot-Leon) shows up at his door. The short film is a dark comedy about isolation and the strange lengths people go to feel less alone.

Ser Criston Cole also involved

The film was written and directed by Oliver Hill, who previously worked in the House of the Dragon writers’ room. Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole) serves as an executive producer.

The nominations also highlight the growing independent work coming out of the House of the Dragon cast and crew, with both Mitchell and Frankel involved.

The project has been making the rounds on the festival circuit and is screening at City Lights (a British Independent Film Awards-qualifying event) in London from November 14–17.

The City Lights nominations are another step for Still Life as it continues its festival run. For fans who have been following the project since the trailer dropped earlier this year, this is a solid bit of validation for Mitchell’s work outside Westeros.
