The Targaryens have never been simple, and Daeron Targaryen is no exception. In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, his charm and chaos collide in ways that leave fans wondering: is he secretly noble, or just a mess wrapped in charisma? Actor Henry Ashton recently opened up about the conflicting takes on Daeron’s morality, revealing how he leaned into the contradictions to bring the prince to life.

Quick read:

  • Ashton says Daeron is good but flawed
  • Showrunners had differing views on his morality
  • Character inspired by Withnail and I

Wrestling with Daeron’s morality

In an exclusive interview with Radio Times, Ashton explained that even the creative team couldn’t agree on Daeron’s true nature. “Ira and Owen had both quite differing opinions on where Daeron was coming from, in terms of, is he a good man who’s pretending not to be, or is he not a good guy but pretending to be?”.

Ashton himself leaned toward the idea that Daeron is fundamentally good, but consumed by his own demons. “They both had very different opinions on it, whether Daeron was a good person or not. I enjoyed leaning into the fact that Daeron was a good person but he’s so consumed with his own problems and pain that he behaves awfully.” .

A charismatic mess brought to life

One of Ashton’s favorite notes from the audition process compared Daeron to Withnail and I—a character who is upper‑class, disheveled, and irresistibly chaotic. “One of the audition notes I’ll share for when they sent the character breakdown through was Withnail and I – very charismatic and upper class, but also just completely disheveled and just an absolute mess. [He’s] weirdly charming and funny – I found that note really fun to play with.” .

That inspiration shines through in Daeron’s portrayal: a prince who can make you laugh one moment and recoil the next. It’s this blend of charm and dysfunction that makes him one of the most unpredictable figures in Westeros—and one of the most fascinating to watch unravel.
