In a fun and candid interview with Extra TV talking about House of the Dragon Season 3, stars Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) and Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) opened up about what it’s really like working on one of television’s biggest shows.

When asked if they still have “pinch-me” moments on set as Game of Thrones fans themselves, Matt Smith answered enthusiastically:

“Hell yeah! Yeah, of course.”

Matt described the surreal experience of filming massive battle sequences, saying it sometimes feels overwhelming:

“There is on every film set, but when you’re surrounded by hundreds of extras dying in fields, it feels like The Somme or something and it’s mad.”

Smith praised the incredible effort that goes into creating the show’s epic world, noting how hundreds of crew members and extras work for months to bring those brief but powerful scenes to life.

Emma D’Arcy agreed, highlighting the majesty of the large ensemble scenes:

“Totally. And I do think it’s those… well, for me, it is those big ensemble scenes where you really sort of feel the majesty of the show.”

The “operatic scale”

Matt Smith further elaborated on the unique energy on set:

“There’s like an operatic scale and a real energy in the room. Just that many bodies in the room striving towards something… This is literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of extras and it requires discipline as well. That’s something very thrilling I think about.”

Both actors expressed deep appreciation for the scale and craftsmanship of the production, with D’Arcy calling it “quite unique.”

The passion behind the dragons

Their comments reflect the immense dedication required to film House of the Dragon. From riding dragons to swinging swords in brutal battle sequences, the cast clearly feels both the pressure and the privilege of being part of such a massive fantasy series.

With Season 3 promising even bigger battles, including the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, it’s clear that the “operatic scale” Matt Smith mentioned is only going to grow.
